Touchscreens that Touch Back
Touchscreens are popular because they are easy to use, can be dynamically configured, and are cost-effective. Yet, as good an input device as it is, the touchscreen lacks the confirming tactile feel that buttons and controls provide.
With Tasthaptic®, a sealed surface that uses the TouchSense® Technology made by Immersion Corporation, tactile feedback designed into your product’s touchscreen interface, graphical buttons feel real. They seem to press and release like mechanical buttons, turning traditionally passive touch interfaces into active displays that “come alive” to provide a greater connection with user.
Tasthaptic®-enabled systems promote:
- A more familiar, engaging, satisfying experience.
- Unmistakable confirmation for fast and accurate data entry.
- Intuitive, natural, multisensory interactions that reflect a quality brand.
- A sealed front surface.
The Perception of Pressing Mechanical Switches
With Immersion TouchSense® Technology, integrated with Tasthaptic® sealead surface, a user doesn’t just feel the hard surface of the touchscreen. Instead, graphical buttons seem to press and release. The result is a more intuitive, natural, and multisensory experience.
With these capabilities, touchscreens can be more effective in environments where sound is ineffective or inappropriate.
The Tasthaptic® technology causes the touchscreen to vibrate, creating the feeling of pressing mechanical switches, emulating crisp qualities and particular force and release characteristics.
TouchSense® tactile feedback is controlled by the application software, so touching different onscreen objects produces the optimal, desired, context-sensitive feel.
Programmability Enhances Productivity
The programmability of TouchSense® Technology can be used to further enhance usability. For example, pressing the Enter button, no matter where it appears on the screen, could always produce a consistent, strong, and crisp tactile sensation, while buttons for other actions could have a different feel, helping the user to know instinctively whether they’ve made the correct selection.
Highlights
- Creates the perception of touching mechanical buttons and switches.
- Works with a wide range of touchscreens sizes and technologies.
- Provide fast tactile response that can be synchronized with sound and graphics.
- Enahances usability, particularly in noisy or distraction environments.
- Help improve user performace, productivity, and safety.
- Create and combine Touch Sensations.
- Rich touch effects can be created by varying the frequency, wave-form, amplitude, and duration of the vibration. This flexibility means that touchscreens can be used for many types of applications by providing a wide range of response:
- Graphical buttons can simulate the familiar up and down clicks of physical buttons.
- Menu items can be programmed to supply a light pulse sensation or a confirming push-back response.
- Control switches can exhibit increasing or decreasing vibrations corresponding to motor or fan speed, radio volume level, lighting levels, or other parameters.
- Enter, Next and other major and minor functions can supply a consistent feel throughout an application.
- Scrolling displays can provide a stop sensation when the first or last items have been reached.
In combination with sight and sound, TouchSense® Technology can provide confirming response for a satisfying, harmonious, multimodal experience.
A key feature of TouchSense® Technology is that its tactile effects can vary in frequency, waveform, magnitude, and duration. The result is that all types of on-screen buttons, switches, and other controls can supply distinct sensations to allow greater discrimination for users.
Application Fields
Thanks to Tasthaptic® this technology can be used easily in harsh environment, medical devices, automotive, aerospace and other fields where a sealed surface is a must.
